Lovely home on the Gulf of California
The Hacienda del Mar is a wonderful home for a family retreat overlooking the sea. Our morning ritual was to get up early and go out on the deck to star gaze and watch the beautiful sunrise! The home is spacious for large groups with a lovely deck with hot tub and infinity pool. While the house is wheelchair accessible, the town is not!! There are dirt roads, cattle grates and curb cut outs that are impossible for a manual wheelchair to navigate. The sidewalks are full of holes and poles that interfere with passage. If we had not rented a car, the person in the wheelchair would have been confined to the house for the two weeks we were there. There is no live TV, you must stream from your own device or play a DVD. If you care to whale watch it is worth the hassle to go to Cabo San Lucas! We wasted our time and money going on a ‘whale watching trip’ from the beach in front of the house. Since the dock in town was not available, we were instructed to get to the boat from the beach by boarding from a little fishing dingy. A little precarious for four 70 year olds in a choppy sea! The boat was a fishing vessel, not made to accommodate 8 people. After slowly cruising for a while we realized that the captain did not know where to look for whales as he asked us where we wanted to go! Needless to say, we did not see anything and had to go through the same process with the bouncing dingy to get back to the beach! We did enjoy the cook, Mariachi band, excellent massage therapist and the daily display of colorful kite boarders. The staff provided us with just about everything that we needed. Hacienda del Mar is a wonderful home for a relaxing, low key family get away that will provide you with lots of special memories!

I just read this review and had to laugh. I have lived here for 40 years; the last 25 have been in a wheelchair. Yes, the curb cuts are a joke and yes they put palm trees and light posts in the middle of sidewalks. This however does not make it inaccessible. I never use my car to go anywhere; I just roll down the street. This is actually way safer than the ridiculous sidewalks. As far as dirt roads and cattle guards are concerned there is 1 cattle guard that we put a piece of plywood over when crossing and the 1 dirt road is highly compacted. Bumpy, but easily passable and it is only 75 yards long. Yes, their whale watching tour was a bust no whales that day. The day before there were huge pods all over. Unfortunately they have tails and move around. Obviously there is no such thing as a whale hang out. All captain can do is go to known paths of travel. As far as the boat, they gave us notice the day before. We scrambled to find the biggest boat available, a 32′ Skipjack. I warned them it would be tight but they wanted to go anyway. Yes, getting on and off the boat was a challenge as the dock are pulled out of the water this time of year. Looking back on this, I was trying to save them the 2-hour trip down to Cabo, but obviously I chose wrong. After 5 years of booking my accessible Villas, these are the first guests to EVER say anything negative about our amazing little village.
