¡Bienvenido al paraiso!
Welcome to paradise!

Welcome to Los Barriles!!

Your host ~ Larry Cooper

Our first visit to Los Barriles was in 1979. I rented a motor home hooked up my 24’ Skipjack sport fisher and headed from Coronado, CA to points unknown with my my wife Terri, & 2 kids who were then 2 & 4. We had no itinerary and 3 months to kill so off we went for an adventure that would change our lives forever.

First stop, Mulege 7.5 hours north of Los Barriles. Stayed for a week, fished, played, and had fun in Bahia Conception. Next stop Loreto area, specifically Puerto Escondido. Stayed 4 days and off we went (not impressed).

Next La Paz back then it was kind of gross, just a big busy dusty city with no charm. Now, it is actually very beautiful. With a new remodeled waterfront, nice hotels and great Restaurants.

Next stop Los Barriles. We looked at each other and said this is it. Heaven on earth! Found a camp spot right on the beach at the now famous Martin Verdugos Motel & RV resort. We never moved another inch. We came back every year until 1992.

While on our way down to Los Barriles pulling a trailer with our last load of building materials to finish our new home, a bus, while attempting to pass us, hit our utility trailer causing us to jackknife and roll over. The accident resulted in a spinal cord injury for me and just 3 stitches for my wife. Since then, as a Quadriplegic, designer and builder, I have finished 12 luxury high-end homes including our newest casa and guest Villa, “Villa Tranquilo”.

In 2007 I started Los Cabos Adventures which is a sport fishing and whale watching charter corporation. We have designed and custom-outfitted Mexico's only completely wheelchair-accessible sport fisher for fishermen of all abilities.

We now live in the main Villa from October through May. Spending the summer in the high sierras north of Truckee, CA. My kids are now 45 and 47. We now have 5 grandchildren so the love of Los Barriles will continue throughout our next generations.

We welcome you to our “Little slice of heaven” and hope you find it as magical as we do!

All of our guest who book directly from us receive complimentary access to our First-Class Concierge Services!

Where are your rentals?

Where are your rentals?

You would be surprised how many listings there are on VRBO and AirBnB that are nowhere near Los Barriles yet they claim to be.

Or they say they are beach front, but when you arrive, the beach is pure rocks.

Or “Close to town” which ends up over 4 miles away over a bumpy dirty gravel road.

Here on our site, we guarantee what you see and read, is actually what you will find when you arrive. All of our listings are in the “Golden Zone” of Los Barriles unless otherwise noted.

  • Los Barriles' "Golden Zone"

“Golden Zone?” This is an area of Los Barriles’ finest located beachfront Villas and Haciendas where you literally step off your deck into the powdery white sand. Where no rental car is needed as everything is completely within walking distance. Shopping, Cantinas, restaurants, everything!

The “Golden Zone” stretches from the southern point, Hotel Palmas de Cortez north to La Playa Restaurant [one of my favorites] distance, about one mile.

Los Barriles is fast becoming the secret jewel of southern baja. It's a true village. Community atmosphere, with no highrise time shares or mega hotels. Safe white sand swimming beaches, warm tropical water, coco palm lined streets, small quaint shops, amazing local authentic food at affordable prices.

  • Why would I stay here instead of other tourist areas nearby?

Population is only around 5,000, half of which are American or Canadian expats.

In contrast, you have La Paz, a bustling town of around 300,000 2 hours drive to the north and Los Cabos a very touristy region with massive all inclusive resorts, timeshares, and ritzy boutique hotels.

In short this area of southern Baja Mexico has something for everyone’s taste and budget.

Why rent directly from the owner?

Why rent directly from the owner?

Our “Owners” are personally known by us and are rigorously vetted. You may find the perfect vacation Villa on VRBO, also listed On our site as well as AirBnB. Why? Well iit just boils down to exposure. The more platforms an owner has his Villa on the better chance he has to find you the perfect guest.

The big difference when you book through us, Los Barriles Vacation Rentals, is you, the guest, will be saving anywhere between $300 and $2,000 in VRBO or AirBnB booking fees.

This is the biggest reason I built this website with my daughter’s brilliant grade school buddy Sara Santa from Sun Valley, Idaho. I was paying these big booking companies a huge annual subscription only to find out that they were also charging my guests $1,500 - $2,000 just to book through them, just to accept your money.

Hotels don’t do that. How are they getting away with it?

Answer: Fear.

They don’t even need to mention each nightmare scam story you have heard of. All they say is “Remember, never send any money directly to the owner”. Then your brain takes over remembering some story you heard about when a guest shows up to a home and there are people living there. It isn’t even a vacation rental. Now, their money is gone, vacation ruined.

That was a scam that was running rampant through AirBnB until they finally locked down their site.

With Los Barriles Vacation Rentals you are dealing with a local company, not some giant conglomerate who has no clue who they are working with. You can rest easy as our owners have been vetted, we know them personally, they are our friends and neighbors. So feel free to book directly and SAVE!

Why should I visit Los Barrilles?

Why should I visit Los Barrilles?

If you are the type who likes lots of tourists, loud neighbors, busy dusty streets, big noisy parties, vendors bothering you while you are trying to relax on the beach, your young adult children constantly being approached to buy drugs, DO NOT COME HERE. You will be very disappointed. None of these things happen here.

This peaceful seaside village is very “tranquilo”, clean, wholesome, family oriented, safe and secure. Feel free to walk the avenue at night popping in and out of shops, cantinas and restaurants without the fear of anyone bothering you or your kids. Same with our pristine white sand beaches. Choose any spot on the beach as there's hardly any other people. No one will ever come up to you and disrupt your peace and tranquility.

Swimming is safe unlike the areas of San Jose del Cabo or Cabo San Lucas where warning signs dot the entry points warning of major undertows. We do not experience ground swells here so we don’t have undertows. It is like swimming in a giant saltwater lake.

Los Barriles has always been the Marlin capital of Mexico. Now, it has become Mexico’s premiere destination for tournament level pickleball, professional kiteboarding and windsurfing schools. Bringing a more affluent visitor to our village.

Los Barriles is made up of a large expat group of full time American and Canadian residents who make up around 40% of the population which keeps a very stable economy for our beautiful, friendly local population.

When we first visited Los Barriles, in 1978, there was virtually nothing here. No restaurants, no grocery stores, no homes on the beach or even any homes owned by foreigners. There was Hotel Playa del Sol, Hotel Palmas de Cortez, and Rancho Buena Vista Hotel along with one RV Park, Martin Verdugos Beach Resort, which is where we stayed year after year for the next 15 years.

Now? How things have changed! For me, some who loves fine dining, and convenient shopping, things have changed for the better.

But you may just need to come experience Los Barriles for yourself!
